When is an opportunity NOT an opportunity? Identifying and securing good opportunities for freelance artists (Workshop)

“Thank you so much for a great session – really clear and informative - I’ve had some really good feedback!” Jane Lawson, Castlefield Gallery Artist Development Co-ordinator

Castlefield Gallery asked Culture Radar to draw on its extensive knowledge and understanding of creative practice and careers, to design two bespoke half-day workshops for older emerging artists for its 2020/21 bOlder programme.

Delivered by Jeanie Scott and Michael Trainor the workshops included information sharing, group discussion and activities to support the artists navigate early-stage career development, and develop the skills to confidently identify and secure useful opportunities in the market place.

  • Workshop 1: Introduction to the artworld and building a career; Where are the opportunities and how do I get them?; When is an opportunity NOT an opportunity?; What are your non-negotiables?
  • Workshop 2: Introduction to artist residencies (types, purpose and the small print); Self-organising - reasons to collaborate and how to do it well; Making applications; Preparing for pitches and interviews.
