Founded in 1871, the Falconer Museum is a beautiful, sandstone building situated on Forres High Street. In 2019, Moray Council announced the closure of its Museums Service, which included the museum being closed to the public until an alternative operating model for the museum and its collection could be identified.
In September 2024, Culture Radar was commissioned to provide informed research, and realistic options for the museum's future, tested through consultation with stakeholders. The resulting report - The Future Falconer Museum: research, options appraisal, recommendations and business case - was completed in October 2024, and was accompanied by a separate Falconer Museum and Moray Museums Service Business Model Report. Both will inform Moray Council's next steps. The report will be published in due course.
Until 2019 the Falconer Museum had survived intact as the only publicly accessible museum of its size and type amongst Scottish accredited museums. Items in Falconer's archaeology and natural history collections are nationally and even internationally significant.
